Industry should publish more in journals

Industry researchers should be encouraged to participate more as authors and reviewers of articles in open, peer-reviewed publications, according to a recent US report. This should help encourage greater intellectual interchange and synergy between industry and academia, which the report claims is important for the country’s research and education.

The recommendations come as a result of the USA’s National Science Board’s recently-released Science and Engineering Indicators 2008 (SEI'08). This biennial report on the state of science and engineering research and education in the USA was said to reveal disturbing trends with serious policy implications.

‘The confluence of a range of indicators raises key questions about future US high-technology industry's competitiveness in international markets and implications for highly skilled jobs at home,’ pointed out National Science Board chairman Steven Beering. ‘These indicators come at an important time.’
