eLife is making changes to its policies on peer review in response to the impact of COVID-19 on the scientific community.

In the wake of the pandemic, the organisation has introduced the changes to help alleviate stress for researchers looking to publish their work, and to accelerate the dissemination of new results.

eLife is planning to take the following steps:

  • Curtail requests for additional experiments during revisions;
  • Suspend its two-month limit on revisions;
  • Make the posting of preprints to bioRxiv or medRxiv the default for all eLife submissions;
  • Extend its 'scoop protection' policy to cover competing work that is published on preprint servers prior to submission; and
  • Mobilise early-career researchers.
