ConTech webinar: An Overview of Semantic Scholar and our Response to the COVID-19 Crisis

ConTech's webinar today is entitled: 'An Overview of Semantic Scholar and our Response to the COVID-19 Crisis'. The speaker is Sebastian Kohlmeier, senior manager for business operations at the Allen Institute for AI.

Semantic Scholar was launched in 2015 as a groundbreaking project at the Allen Institute for AI, a nonprofit research institute founded by philanthropist Paul G. Allen to develop AI that benefits the common good. It comprises a team of researchers and engineers building a smarter way to search and discover scientific knowledge across a corpus of 180M+ research papers, powered by state-of-the-art AI technology and completely free to use by scholars everywhere. The mission at Semantic Scholar is to accelerate scientific breakthroughs by helping scholars locate and understand the right research, make important connections, and overcome information overload. 

Kohmleier said: 'In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we built and released a full text dataset optimized for machine readability called CORD-19 in collaboration with leading research institutes. The research and technology that powers Semantic Scholar gave us the ability to move quickly in response to The White House’s request to aggregate the largest structured dataset of coronavirus research for the global research community (you can learn more in our joint statement: Call to Action to the Tech Community on New Machine Readable COVID-19 Dataset).
