Oxford University Press has made updates to the American National Biography (ANB) online. This update will include the biographies of 41 men and women who recently died, and who had a significant impact on American society and American culture during their lifetime.

There is a strong political presence in this update, according to the publisher. New entries to the resource include former US president Gerald Ford and first lady Betty Ford, alongside Lady Bird Johnson and Shirley Chisholm. Lady Bird Johnson was first lady during the presidency of her husband Lyndon B. Johnson from 1963-69 and Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in 1968.

These biographies join nearly 19,000 biographies already online in the collection.
