Springer has donated journals and books to the Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) in Australia. This follows a massive fire in March 2007 which caused over AUD $12 million in damage.

Springer has supported the re-establishment of the library facilities by donating 26 volumes of the journal Coral Reefs as well as a selection of Springer books.

‘When the editors of Coral Reefs contacted our publishing editors with the news, we quickly decided to help, collecting together the journals we had in stock and reprinting the ones that were no longer in print,’ explained Peter Hendriks, Springer’s president of publishing & marketing. 'Centre for Marine Studies (CMS) staff then selected the Springer books they thought would be most useful, and our people in publishing, logistics and communications pulled together to get the shipment to Heron Island. We are pleased that the materials have now arrived and hope that they will help contribute to the success of the Heron Island Research Station’s important work.'
