Smart Materials and Structures, as published by the Institute of Physics Publishing, has been described as one of the most influential journals in the field of engineering in 2009, by Thomson Reuters website, ScienceWatch.com.

According to the not-for-profit publisher, IOPP, recent analysis by US providers of professional information, Thomson Reuters, highlighted the journal as having a significant impact in the field of engineering.

The journal has also been placed among the most highly cited journals in this field, which according to the IOPP, shows Smart Materials and Structures to be a top publication choice for authors.
