SAGE Publishing has acquired the full portfolio of journals from the STM publisher, Wichtig. The first issues with SAGE will publish January 2018.

Wichtig Publishing was established in Milan, Italy, by the nephrologist Diego Brancaccio more than 40 years ago, with an ambition to publish niche speciality medical journals and books. The publishing portfolio covers topics such as nephrology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, and biomaterials.

Speaking of the acquisition, Tessa Picknett, executive director for STM at SAGE Publishing, said: 'SAGE continues to grow its profile and footprint within the science, technology and medical (STM) sector, and this acquisition clearly demonstrates our long term commitment to publishing within these fields. Wichtig’s high quality journal program perfectly complements SAGE’s existing medical portfolio, and we are delighted to be able to welcome these journals, publishing in a broad range of disciplines, to SAGE.

'We are very much look forward to working with the highly regarded editorial boards and leading society partners, using both SAGE’s expertise and global reach to further increase the journals visibility and impact, as an integral part of SAGE’s STM program.'

Giulio Zuanetti, general manager at Wichtig, added: 'It has always been our publishing mission to ensure that our journals receive personal attention and high quality service on a global platform. These principles underpin the steady growth of the Wichtig journal portfolio, thanks to the resilient work of a small group of exceptionally passionate people.

'SAGE is one of those rare companies which has the global reach of a large business, with the mindset and culture of a smaller company who works directly with the scholarly community.  We know with confidence that SAGE is the right publisher to take forwards the development of these journals and we look forward to seeing them prosper in their new home.'
