New society helps editors
A new membership organisation has been formed to support managing and technical editors of peer-reviewed journals.
The International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE) recognises that, despite the large numbers of such titles, most editorial office staff work in isolation. This new society is said to be the first network developed specifically for such individuals where they can share ideas, concerns and best practices. Membership will be open to all managing editors, administrative staff, technical editors, writers, proof-readers and editors-in-chief who perform their own administrative duties, says ISMTE.
The aims of the society include creating a bridge to other organisations, such as ALPSP, Council of Science Editors, WAME, and ICMJE, as well as developing a set of industry-recognised standards leading to certification.
The launch of ISMTE is helped by financial support from SAGE Publications. 'SAGE chose to support the establishment of the ISMTE because, as a publisher of over 460 scholarly journals, we value the important role managing and technical editors play in professional and high quality administration of journals,' commented Peter Binfied, SAGE’s director of journals editorial. 'We look forward to partnering with this group in the future.'
