De Gruyter acquires Birkhäuser

De Gruyter has signed a deal to purchase the publishing house Birkhäuser, which  declared insolvency in March of this year. The Swiss-based German-language publisher for design and architecture was which was founded in 1879 and its catalogue includes around 50 front-list and 2,500 back-list titles.

‘Our purchase of Birkhäuser has considerably expanded our range of exclusive publications in art history and neighboring fields,’ explained De Gruyter CEO’s Sven Fund. Alongside the acquisition of Birkhäuser's architecture and design publishing division, the takeover includes the Birkhäuser brand name.
