JMIR Publications has announced the launch of its Karma Reviewer Rewards Program, a merit-based initiative designed to better recognise and reward the essential role of peer reviewers in the scholarly publishing process. The programme aims to introduce a structured framework that prioritises the quality and rigour of reviews over volume, in a strategic shift in how reviewer contributions are assessed and acknowledged.

JMIR says the updated Karma programme moves away from traditional quantity-driven incentives, instead linking rewards directly to the depth, professionalism, and scholarly value of reviewer feedback. Karma points are awarded only when reviews meet defined quality benchmarks, as verified through editorial assessment, reinforcing high standards across the peer-review process.

“Peer review is critical work. We know that expertise deserves more than just gratitude; it deserves real recognition,” said Sean Jeong, CEO of JMIR Publications. “The Karma program is our commitment to transparency. We want to ensure that the experts we rely on are properly honoured for their contribution.”

Rewards are issued once an editorial decision has been reached and the review has satisfied quality criteria. Accumulated Karma points are converted into credits, which reviewers can redeem as discounts on article processing fees and other JMIR services.

The programme aims to strengthen the integrity of the scholarly record while helping reviewers offset the costs of their own future publications. JMIR Publications positions the initiative as a step towards a more sustainable and equitable peer-review ecosystem, with a clear emphasis on recognising substantive intellectual labour.
