JMIR expands Jisc OA agreement with three UK institutions

JMIR Publications has expanded its Flat-Fee Unlimited Open Access Partnership with Jisc, with three additional UK universities joining the agreement and all existing participants renewing their commitment for the 2026–2027 term.
The University of St. Andrews, the University of York and the University of Surrey have joined the agreement, bringing the total number of participating institutions to 19.
The renewed partnership covers articles accepted for publication between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027. Under the model, eligible corresponding authors at participating institutions can publish an unlimited number of articles across JMIR Publications’ portfolio of more than 30 Gold Open Access journals without paying individual Article Processing Charges (APCs).
According to JMIR Publications, the agreement is designed to simplify the publication process for researchers while supporting sustainable open access publishing models.
“We are pleased to expand our collaboration with Jisc and welcome the University of St. Andrews, the University of York, and the University of Surrey to this agreement,” said Dennis O’Brien, VP Communications and Partnerships at JMIR Publications.
“Our partnership growth stems from a shared commitment to advancing open science. Jisc focuses on the development of long-term, sustainable models that support fully open access, independent publishers. This collaboration demonstrates how institutions and publishers can align to build a more equitable scholarly communications ecosystem.”
The University of Surrey highlighted the agreement as part of its broader open science strategy.
“The University of Surrey is committed to making Open Access sustainable and available to all our researchers, advancing the reach and impact of our research. This partnership with JMIR Publications is a key step in fulfilling that vision offering additional publishing opportunities to our researchers with limited funding available for publications” added Eleonora Gandolfi, Associate Director (Research and Innovation) at the University of Surrey Library.
“Removing the financial burden of Article Processing Charges allows our researchers to prioritize the open and rapid sharing of their work. This pilot partnership agreement aligns perfectly with our strategic commitment to open science and ensures our digital health discoveries are widely available to those who need them most.”
The flat-fee model removes APCs for eligible corresponding authors, allowing researchers at participating institutions to publish across the publisher’s journals, including the Journal of Medical Internet Research, without incurring individual publication charges.
