IGI Global, University of Rhode Island sign open access agreement

Under the terms of the new partnership, faculty members at the University of Rhode Island will receive a five per cent discount on article processing charges (APCs). This update joins other recent publishing news regarding the growth of IGI Global’s open access journal programme. The discount applies when publishing within the company’s portfolio, which includes nearly 200 peer-reviewed journals. These cover diverse fields such as business, medicine, technology, and social sciences.
The latest in publishing news: Lowering OA barriers
The agreement between IGI Global and URI is a significant development in current publishing news. It aims to increase the global reach of research produced at the University of Rhode Island. By publishing under Creative Commons (CC BY) licensing, authors ensure their work is freely available to the public from the moment of publication.
This model of open access is particularly beneficial for scholarly impact. Research published through this programme benefits from increased discoverability, as the journals are indexed in major databases such as Scopus and Web of Science.
Nick Newcomer, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at IGI Global Scientific Publishing, welcomed the partnership. He stated: “We are pleased to sign this agreement with the University of Rhode Island. This open access agreement reinforces our shared commitment to removing barriers to open access and increasing the visibility and impact of scholarly research.”
Expanding institutional open access models
This agreement with URI is part of a broader shift in how IGI Global engages with the library community. Beyond simple APC discounts, the publisher has developed several alternative models to support the transition to open research.
Flat-fee and transformative agreements
For institutions seeking more predictable costs, IGI Global offers a flat-fee open access publishing agreement. This model provides unlimited open access publishing for an institution’s researchers under a single annual fee. This removes the administrative burden of managing individual APC payments for every article.
Read and publish options
Libraries can also opt for ‘read and publish’ models. These agreements combine unlimited open access publishing rights with access to the publisher’s full digital library. The IGI Global ebook collection currently includes more than 10,000 scholarly ebooks and over 200,000 peer-reviewed chapters. These are available through various procurement methods, including subscription, evidence-based acquisition, or perpetual licence.
