KnowledgeWorks Global has launched a new generation of human-guided, AI-enabled publishing workflows designed to help scholarly publishers adapt to the growing influence of artificial intelligence across research communication.

Developed through the company’s KGL Smart Lab, the new infrastructure embeds AI directly into editorial, production and hosting environments, aiming to transform traditional publishing processes into more intelligent and policy-aware systems.

The development comes as publishers face increasing pressure to scale operations, safeguard research integrity, meet accessibility mandates and prepare content for AI-driven discovery while maintaining trust and transparency.

At the centre of the launch is the expansion of KGL’s Smart Review platform, which integrates AI-assisted oversight into peer review and editorial workflows. The system includes tools such as human face recognition and problematic statement detection, intended to help publishers identify potential risks and strengthen research integrity checks while reducing the manual burden on editorial teams.

Alongside integrity-focused capabilities, KGL has also introduced AI-driven tools designed to improve accessibility and audience reach. These include automated generation of alt text and plain-language summaries, allowing publishers to embed accessibility and comprehension directly into the publishing process.

According to KGL, the approach aims to support publishers in serving broader communities, including researchers, policymakers, journalists and the wider public, while helping organisations meet accessibility and compliance requirements.

Hong Zhou, Vice President of Product Management at KGL, commented: “The industry doesn’t need more disconnected AI features, it needs integrated infrastructure. We’re embedding AI across the publishing lifecycle in ways that amplify human expertise, enforce policy, and prepare trusted content for the next generation of discovery and licensing. This is about building systems that scale responsibly.”

The company said the expanded Smart Lab capabilities are designed to enable publishers to move beyond isolated AI tools and instead adopt a cohesive infrastructure that integrates responsible AI with human expertise across the publishing lifecycle.
