American Physical Society to launch OA journal on AI in scientific research

The American Physical Society is launching PRX Intelligence, an open access journal that will welcome manuscripts on AI and machine learning methods and their application to advance scientific understanding. The journal will accept submissions starting in February 2026.
“The speed and scale of innovation happening in the scientific machine learning and AI space has been explosive. We’re excited to support these innovations by providing a new high-impact, open access platform for work that is fundamental to the future of science and society,” said Rachel Burley, APS’ chief publications officer.
The journal’s scope will cover theory, simulations, and experiments in physics and related fields, including computer science, mathematics, engineering, materials science, chemistry, biology, and earth and environmental sciences. The American Physical Society will waive article publication charges for all manuscripts submitted in 2026 and subsequently accepted for publication.
“In response to recent growth in multidisciplinary research, we have expanded the scope and reach of the Physical Review journals with high-impact open access titles like PRX Quantum, PRX Energy, and PRX Life,” said Jeff Lewandowski, APS’ director of publishing. “With PRX Intelligence, our goal is to bring the same high-quality peer review and publishing experience to researchers working on topics where math, science, and engineering intersect with AI, machine learning, and related approaches.”
