STM seeks input on GenAI use of research content before June deadline

STM, the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers, is urging researchers, institutions, GenAI developers, funders, and publishers to submit input to “Toward Responsible Use of Research Content in Generative AI” before the consultation closes in mid-June.
The discussion document, published in March, sets out considerations for handling peer-reviewed scholarly content, covering attribution, citation integrity, and verifiability in GenAI tools, covering attribution, citation integrity, and verifiability. It focuses on what makes research content distinct from other types of content, paying attention to quality assurance through peer review, anchored to a Version of Record, and other processes that safeguard the integrity of the scholarly record.
“We’re at a point where the decisions being made about how AI systems handle research content will shape what researchers can trust for years to come,” said Hylke Koers, Chief Information Officer, STM. “The questions raised need wide input from GenAI developers, researchers, institutions, funders, and publishers.”
