MIT Press launches interdisciplinary intelligence journal NeuroNexus

MIT Press has announced the launch of NeuroNexus, a new interdisciplinary journal dedicated to advancing understanding of both human and machine intelligence through research spanning the psychological, brain and computational sciences.

The new title will publish original research, reviews and theoretical work covering topics including the cognitive and neural foundations of intelligence, human-centred artificial intelligence and cognitive enhancement.

According to the publisher, the journal will place a particular emphasis on real-world applications and societal implications, including ethics, education and the responsible development of intelligent technologies.

MIT Press said that while interdisciplinary research into intelligence has expanded significantly in recent years, there has not previously been a single journal dedicated to bringing together work from across these related disciplines. NeuroNexus aims to provide a common venue for researchers working at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience and engineering.

The journal’s founding editor-in-chief will be Aron Barbey, who serves as Director of the Notre Dame Human Neuroimaging Center and Andrew J. McKenna Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame.

“NeuroNexus takes on one of the hardest problems in science: understanding how intelligence arises—in the mind, in the brain, and in the machines we build,” said Barbey. “No field can answer that alone, and the most important advances now come from where psychology, neuroscience, and engineering meet. NeuroNexus is the home for that work, where these fields study intelligence together and apply what they learn responsibly.”

Nick Lindsay, director of journals and open access at MIT Press, said the launch comes at a significant moment for multiple disciplines involved in intelligence research.

“We’re thrilled to be publishing NeuroNexus during this time of major development in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, psychology, and computer science,” said Lindsay. “We hope that NeuroNexus provides the ideal venue for researchers working in these interdisciplinary areas, and that the scholarship helps advance the field of NeuroAI.”
