IOP Publishing (IOPP) has achieved a 36% reduction in carbon emissions compared to its 2020 baseline.

The publisher says the achievement reflects its commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of its operations and supporting a more sustainable, diverse, and equitable future for the global scientific community.

Key milestones include the move to its new, energy-efficient head office in Bristol, designed to deliver long-term reductions in environmental impact. IOPP’s digital‑first publishing strategy also continues to generate significant emissions savings across the entire content lifecycle. Further progress has been achieved throughout its supply chain, supported by active engagement with suppliers, which has already led to measurable reductions.

IOPP will aim to continue cutting its Scope 3 emissions, which make up around 90% of its footprint. It says the most significant opportunities lie in purchased goods and services, business travel, and employee commuting which represent the organisation’s largest sources of emissions.

“Our progress demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is embedded into business decisions,” said Liz Martin, Head of Content and Production & Sustainability Lead at IOPP. “We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far and remain committed to driving further positive change across our operations and taking our colleagues with us on this journey.”

Since 2020, IOPP has worked to understand its full environmental impact, identify areas for change, and track progress transparently. This work has been supported by ClimatePartner, a global solutions provider helping businesses measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions, and is informed by the industry initiative DIMPACT, which facilitates media and publishing organisations in mapping and reducing the carbon footprint of digital content delivery.

Marett Howlin, Senior Sustainability Consultant at ClimatePartner comments: “Many organisations are aiming for a 30–50% carbon reduction by 2030, measured against a 2020 baseline. Having already achieved a 36% reduction, IOPP is not just keeping pace with industry ambition, it’s out in front. This progress reflects a genuine commitment to sustainability and is something they can be proud of.”
