Bibliometric pioneer picks up lifetime achievement award

Eugene Garfield has received the 2006 Online Information Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of more than 50 years of dedication, leadership and innovation in the information industry. He received the award at the 2006 International Information Industry Awards at the end of last year.

Garfield is chairman emeritus of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) – now Thomson Scientific. He began regularly publishing the Science Citation Index (SCI) in 1964 through the Institute for Scientific Information, based on his own research. SCI and numerous other tools that he was responsible for have now been integrated in Thomson’s Web of Science, a key component of ISI Web of Knowledge.
