arXiv has secured $17.2 million in new philanthropic commitments to support its transition from Cornell University to an independent nonprofit organisation.

The multiyear funding comes from Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets and Siegel Family Endowment, with the commitments spanning three to five years.

The investment will support arXiv as it establishes itself as an independent organisation, including strengthening its technical infrastructure, supporting ongoing operations and improving services for researchers worldwide.

The announcement comes two months after arXiv unveiled its inaugural Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors, key steps in its transition from Cornell University to an independent nonprofit responsible for the stewardship of the research repository.

Founded 35 years ago, arXiv enables researchers to share and access scientific findings and now serves millions of users annually. Its subject coverage includes physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics.

The new funding will support three main areas: the general operation and continued improvement of arXiv’s services; further technical development of the platform; and the strengthening of arXiv’s governance and organisational operations as an independent nonprofit.

Technical development will include work around the management of AI-generated content and other emerging challenges in scholarly communication.

Penelope Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of arXiv, said: “I am grateful for the commitments from Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets, and Siegel Family Endowment, which put arXiv on solid footing as we move into this next chapter. Their generous support provides a strong foundation and momentum for arXiv to continue to grow and serve the research community for the long term.”

The commitments build on previous philanthropic support for arXiv, which also receives backing from member organisations, foundations, affiliates, sponsors and other longstanding supporters.
