Annual Reviews expands conference capabilities with Underline Science acquisition

Annual Reviews has acquired event technology provider Underline Science in a move designed to expand its support for scholarly societies and conference organisers worldwide.
The nonprofit publisher said the acquisition would strengthen its ability to serve research communities by combining its established publishing and convening activities with Underline’s expertise in conference and event management.
Annual Reviews publishes 51 journals spanning the biomedical, life, physical and social sciences. Alongside its publishing activities, the organisation hosts events including the Charleston Conference and Charleston Conference Asia, and publishes Knowable Magazine, Katina Magazine and Knowledge Unlatched.
The addition of Underline’s event platform and services is intended to help scholarly organisations increase engagement with stakeholders, reach wider audiences and extend the impact of their meetings and conferences.
The combined offering will support virtual, hybrid and in-person events, providing services including an award-winning event application, preservation of conference video content, ticketing, attendee and speaker management, onsite audiovisual support and global event coordination.

Annual Reviews said organisations would be able to use these capabilities in ways that align with their own goals, values and communities.
Richard Gallagher, President and Editor-in-Chief of Annual Reviews, said: “Publishing review articles is one way of advancing knowledge; fostering the conversations that move ideas forward is another. By adding Underline’s event expertise to our experience serving scholarly communities, we can help organizations create events that build relationships and extend the reach and impact of their meetings.”
Underline Science was founded in 2019 with a focus on helping scholarly organisations improve event experiences and extend the reach of conference content beyond the event itself.
Jernej Masnec, CEO of Underline Science, said: “Underline was founded in 2019 to help scholarly organisations deliver outstanding event experiences and extend their reach beyond the walls of a conference venue. Becoming part of Annual Reviews enables those capabilities to have an even greater impact through an organisation with long established ties to scholarly communities. The Underline team and operations will remain in place, ensuring continuity for clients.”
