Johns Hopkins University Press and BioOne have announced plans to merge, in a move aimed at strengthening community impact, increasing operational scale, and expanding how both organisations engage with researchers.

Under the agreement, BioOne’s flagship aggregation of bioscience research journals, BioOne Complete, along with its eBook collections, will continue as distinct products within Hopkins Press. The integration will also bring BioOne’s offerings alongside Project MUSE, Hopkins Press’s established platform for journals and books in the humanities and social sciences.

Both organisations have been early adopters of the Subscribe to Open model, and the combined entity is expected to benefit from operational efficiencies and increased scale.

Wendy Queen, Chief Transformation Officer at Hopkins Press, will lead the integration, working closely with BioOne CEO Lauren Kane, who will remain in place to support the transition through January 2027. Existing commitments to BioOne’s network of publishers and libraries will remain unchanged.

“For 25 years, BioOne has supported the visibility, independence, and sustainability of global societies and research organisations publishing across the biosciences,” said Kane. “This integration will allow BioOne to expand and extend this support far into the future, enabling new services, shared infrastructure, and sustaining revenue for our nonprofit community. Hopkins Press shares BioOne’s values and vision for a thriving independent scholarly ecosystem, making them an ideal partner in this next phase of growth.”

“We are thrilled to welcome BioOne to Hopkins Press,” added Barbara Kline Pope, Executive Director of Hopkins Press. “We’ve been long-time collaborators with Lauren and her team, making a formal merger a natural next step in achieving our mutual goals. So often we talk about the power of mission-driven scholarly organisations coming together to make a bigger impact. Now we are doing just that, and we couldn’t be more excited!”

Hopkins Press and BioOne said they are committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent transition, with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations for stakeholders. The deal is expected to close on August 31, 2026, subject to final governance and legal approvals.
