BioOne reaches sustainability threshold for 2026 Subscribe to Open pilot

BioOne has announced that its Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot has reached its sustainability threshold for 2026, ensuring that the 2026 volumes of 71 titles within the BioOne Complete aggregation will be published Open Access, immediately and in perpetuity.
The milestone was achieved with support from consortia and library partners worldwide. BioOne’s S2O cohort comprises 54 societies, museums and research organisations, representing what the organisation describes as the largest number of independent publishers under a single S2O offer to date. The cohort also includes the first S2O publishers from Japan, Kenya, China and Brazil.
Lauren Kane, BioOne CEO, said: “We are gratified but not surprised, by the success of BioOne’s inaugural Subscribe to Open offer. Since BioOne’s inception, we have benefited from the consistent and generous support of the global library community for our programs, our mission, and our vision for a more equitable publishing ecosystem.”
The S2O model works by leveraging existing subscription funds and workflows to enable broader access to scholarly content, while providing exclusive benefits to supporting institutions. BioOne Complete encompasses 219 titles, with subscription revenue shared across BioOne’s community of small society and independent publishers, reinvesting library funds in nonprofit scholarly communication.
BioOne’s move into S2O follows earlier implementations by Annual Reviews, Project MUSE and other members of the S2O Community of Practice, which advocate the transparent sharing of lessons learned to support a more sustainable future for scholarly publishing.
