Collections with a Conscience: How Libraries Support Sustainability in Practice
Tue, May 19, 2026 2pm BST – supported by Clarivate
When students and faculty bring questions about climate, equity, peace, and global challenges into their teaching and research, libraries play a critical enabling role, directly supporting curriculum needs and real-world research questions.
This session explores how sustainability themes are put into practice within libraries, focusing on thoughtful collection development, effective discovery approaches, and strong partnerships with faculty. Hear from Neyda Gilman, Librarian at Binghamton University Libraries and an inaugural SUNY Sustainability Faculty Fellow, alongside Jennifer Embree, Subject Librarian and Sustainability Hub Coordinator at Binghamton University Libraries, as they share insights into how they support sustainability pedagogy and engagement on campus and how the fellowship works to support faculty in embedding sustainability and climate-related themes into existing curricula.
With a strong emphasis on identifying, evaluating, and teaching with high-quality information resources, our expert speakers will illustrate how sustainability-related collections are activated through teaching partnerships and discovery strategies, and how they emerge organically from academic needs rather than being driven by formal SDG alignment.
The discussion will focus on practical approaches to discovery, instruction and outreach, and how libraries respond to evolving curriculum needs, particularly around sustainability and peace-related topics. We will hear from Farhana Hoque, Senior Manager, Product Marketing at Clarivate, as she highlights relevant ProQuest Digital Collections content that supports these areas, including a look ahead to forthcoming additions in Peace Studies within ProQuest One Global Studies & International Relations, to help teams plan teaching support, learning objects and communications with confidence.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand how sustainability-related content is supported through everyday library practice, rather than explicit SDG-driven acquisition
- Identify practical discovery and instruction approaches that help surface sustainability and peace-related themes across disciplines
- Strengthen library–faculty partnerships that embed collections into teaching and research in meaningful ways
