Altmetric adds Cassyni research talks to attention tracking
Altmetric has begun tracking mentions of published scholarly outputs made in Cassyni research talks, adding seminar activity as a new source of research attention data.
Journals, societies and university departments are increasingly recording and publishing talks accompanying new research papers. Cassyni publishes these talks as structured research outputs, with each assigned a Crossref DOI and transcript. Under the new integration, Altmetric matches references made during Cassyni talks to the papers they discuss. Papers referenced in a Cassyni talk will now display a seminar mention on their Altmetric badge, shown in red.
Altmetric gives a seminar mention the same weighting as a mention in a policy document or clinical guideline when calculating its Altmetric Attention Score.
The talks themselves will also become measurable research outputs. Each Cassyni talk carries its own DOI and can now accrue an Altmetric Attention Score, with an Altmetric badge on the talk page showing where and by whom it is being discussed.
For organisations subscribing to Altmetric Explorer, seminar activity will appear in Reports and Details Page Timelines as an additional source within the existing dataset.
The companies say mentions within research talks can provide signals of expert attention that emerge more quickly than formal citations, while also capturing connections between research papers that may not be visible through other sources.
The integration builds on an existing relationship between Cassyni and Digital Science. Cassyni seminars are already indexed in Digital Science’s Dimensions platform, where they have their own publication-type filter and full metadata records, with recordings playable directly from the platform.
Ben Kaube, Co-founder, Cassyni, said: “A talk is a research output, and it should be measurable the way an article is. That is why talks carry DOIs, are indexed in Dimensions, and are now measured by Altmetric.”
Miguel Garcia, VP of Product, Digital Science, said: “A complete view of research influence means tracking the conversations that shape how research is understood. Seminars are where researchers present their new work to peers and get challenged on it, and adding that crucial discussion provides a much more complete perspective of the attention data.”
