Open access publisher BioMed Central and the Brazilian Retina and Vitreous Society has announced the launch of the International Journal of Retina and Vitreous (IJRV), the official journal of the society. The journal will begin publishing in the second quarter of 2015.

The journal is focused on the ophthalmic subspecialty of vitreoretinal disorders and presents original articles on new approaches to diagnosis, outcomes of clinical trials, innovations in pharmacological therapy and surgical techniques, as well as basic science advances that impact clinical practice.

'Currently only a few journals focus specifically on the field of retina and vitreous', said editors-in-Chief, Jay Duker, professor and chair of ophthalmology at Tufts University Medical Center in Boston, and Eduardo Rodrigues, professor of ophthalmology at Federal University of São Paulo. 'As a result, many deserving manuscripts are not able to be published. The addition of another high quality journal concentrating on vitreoretinal disease would be a great contribution.'

Duker and Rodrigues want interested readers to readily access the research, so there was no doubt that the journal had to be open access, they said: 'As avid readers of retinal publications, we are often bothered when we find an interesting paper but it is behind a pay wall and, thereby, restricting access to it.'
