Springer has taken control of the journal Autoimmunity Highlights, which was previously owned by A. Menarini Diagnostics, an Italian company.

The publisher has also decided to make the journal an open access publication, which will allow for its published findings to be immediately available. However, Springer says readers should not expect any changes in the high quality of the content.

Autoimmunity Highlights presents material of interest to diverse professionals working on autoimmune diseases, and examines all aspects including diagnosis, treatment and management. The journal offers specific coverage of all autoimmune diseases, including  rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease, thyroid disease and diabetes, among others.

New challenges in the field receive special attention, among them genetics, molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, point-of-care testing, information technology and communication, and health economics.

'I am excited about the next chapter in the journal’s history, and delighted to continue working with Springer,' said Nicola Bizzaro, editor-in-chief for Autoimmunity Highlights. 'Given Springer’s robust OA portfolio, I am confident Springer can provide the best exposure for the contents of the journal.'

Carlotta d’Imporzano, executive editor of medicine journals at Springer, added: 'We are happy to have the opportunity to grow this journal and to transition it to an open access model. The journal was always managed with scientific rigour and followed best practices in peer review, so it is not a difficult task to make Autoimmunity Highlights a part of Springer’s more than 450 open access journals.'
