The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) has agreed a new partnership with Publishing Technology to ensure that university workflow tool PackTracker can continue.

The PackTracker service is used by information managers at over 40 universities across the UK to manage copyright material used in student course packs. It allows academics to scan course material and manage the copyright and licensing requirements automatically.

With almost a third (30 per cent) of all reported scanning of published materials by the Higher Education sector coming to CLA from PackTracker customers, the two organisations say this technology saves British universities thousands of administrative hours every year.

Mat Pfleger, managing director of CLA, said: 'We are committed to supporting those working in information management in higher education. This new partnership will enable academics using the service to continue to provide students with the literature they need to study and learn from, and will ensure that this content is licensed and validated accurately.'

Michael Cairns, CEO of Publishing Technology, added: 'Publishing Technology has delivered PackTracker to the UK higher education market for many years and helped support universities in managing their course pack provision. We are delighted to be able to continue this by working together with CLA to benefit our customers.'

The partnership also sees the two companies working together on the continued provision of Heronweb, Publishing Technology’s copyright clearance and outsourced scanning service. Meghan Mazella of CLA will lead the partnership and the future development of the service for universities.
